The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is a Washington, DC based nonprofit organization dedicated to sustainable, high-performing buildings and communities that improve the quality of life for everyone. Established in 2008 to drive the adoption of the LEED rating system, GBCI now administers project certifications and professional credentials and certificates for rating systems that cover nearly every facet of the sustainability industry. Our global team of green building specialists assures quality control and implementation of LEED, TRUE, SITES, PEER, EDGE, WELL, and ICP, which promote sustainability, health and wellness, and resilience in the built environment.

The Senior Manager, Innovation & Research will oversee department’s research activities in areas that align with the organizational priorities; and provide expertise and direction for the development of the EA and EQ categories of the LEED rating system.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Design, manage and execute research activities on industry issues and trends to educate the marketplace, add to the green building body of knowledge; and help in the development of rating systems, codes, policies, etc
  • Conduct primary and secondary research to build an understanding of the market opportunities, technical needs, and areas of expansion as per the strategic priorities of USGBC and GBCI
  • Explore new research ideas and opportunities for external funding in line with organizational priorities and market needs
  • Plan and develop proposals for new research and development projects
  • Publish research outcomes, and findings as reports, whitepapers, research papers and technical articles.
  • Support new product development and optimization of existing products by providing subject matter expertise in line with identifying market trends and for adaptation at a larger scale.
  • Conduct data analytics for improving product performance, increasing scalability, optimizing the outcome, and ease in customer experience.
  • Represent USGBC and GBCI in public speaking engagements (such as conferences, and events) as an expert representative/speaker, and networking with various stakeholder groups for new research opportunities, strategies, and work collaboration.

Education & Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in architecture, mechanical/environmental/civil engineering, sustainability, energy, or a related field
  • Master’s Degree in sustainability, building energy performance, green buildings, or a related field
  • 7+ years of related professional experience
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Suite and software for building performance analysis and visualization such as IES, eQUEST, or Design-Builder
  • Knowledge of the LEED rating system
  • Understanding of national and international energy and indoor environmental quality standards and codes
  • Ability to clearly communicate information or ideas verbally and in writing and produce good quality technical writing outputs

Desirable Skills and Qualifications:

  • Prior experience of conducting research activities in the field of green buildings and sustainability
  • Current GBCI credential or professional certificate, or a commitment to earn one within the first year of employment
  • Eagerness to learn, develop your own expertise, and share your growing expertise with colleagues
  • Persistence in engaging with challenges, flexibility to find multiple solutions, and the ability to keep the end goal in mind while working on each part of the solution
  • Ability to operate in a fast-paced environment and quickly adapt to new circumstances or juggle multiple daily tasks
  • Strong sense of personal responsibility and accountability for delivering high quality work
