The Opportunity:

Regional Sustainability Specialists are members of the Perkins Eastman firmwide sustainability team that focus their support and efforts on a specific region, in this case, New York. The firmwide sustainability team focuses on sustainability efforts including the education of staff, reporting on sustainability metrics, the development of sustainability resources, greening the firm’s operations, and creating a case for sustainability for all of Perkins Eastman’s clients. The team also supports research initiatives related to sustainability, including measurement of indoor environmental quality factors.

In addition to providing support on firmwide sustainability initiatives, the regional sustainability specialist will assist with sustainable projects across the firm, focused primarily within their region. Projects vary from small interior fit-outs to large master planning exercises and tasks, including sustainable strategy identification and goal setting, third party certification documentation (LEED, WELL, etc), climate analysis, project performance analysis, and local code and legislation assessments.

The Regional Sustainability Specialist position has been specifically developed to address the growing demand for local sustainability expertise.

Primary Responsibilities:

General Responsibilities

  • Develop and present educational materials around a wide range of sustainability topics, specifically developed for the New York region
  • Serve as a resource for the New York office as a subject matter expert around a variety of sustainability topics.
  • Work to improve the sustainability of Perkins Eastman’s operations.
  • Assist with firmwide reporting of sustainability metrics.
  • Assist in implementing firmwide sustainability goals within the New York region.
  • Participate in sub-committees as needed related to specific sustainability initiatives.
  • Stay up to date with current trends and industry research related to sustainability.
  • Stay up to date with current, New York-specific, sustainability-related building codes and public initiatives.
  • Develop New York specific strategies, communications, and marketing material to help build PE’s reputation around sustainability throughout the region.
  • Develop and implement strategies to improve internal sustainability knowledge, culture, and engagement with the New York region.
  • Participate in and present at regional and national conferences that are identified as a priority for our New York presence around sustainability.
  • Be an established thought leader in the industry through conference presentations, white papers, etc.
  • Up to 5% travel to other offices anticipated.

Project Responsibilities

  • Lead and guide sustainability focused project work including third party certification documentation and performance analysis for projects of a variety of types and sizes.
  • Advance high-performance design strategies and systems integration in support of sustainable design certifications.
  • Produce effective visualizations and illustrations of projects for presentation to clients, public authorities, and partners.
  • Engage in business development, assist with marketing pursuits and proposal development, and participate in client interviews.
  • Conduct research centered on how building performance affects occupants.
  • Develop region-specific actionable sustainable strategies and guidelines.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor or master’s degree in Sustainability, Architecture, interior design, Urban Planning, or a related field. At least one built-environment specific degree is required.
  • 7 to 10 years of experience in the sustainability field recommended, preferably within the New York region.
  • Passion for sustainability and green building.
  • Extensive knowledge of sustainable design strategies, material selection, and technologies required.
  • Concentration on sustainability during undergrad or graduate program highly recommended.
  • Ability to work independently and on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, excellent graphic presentation skills, and the ability to present in front of large groups.
  • Intellectual curiosity, eagerness to engage with others, and willingness to contribute to a healthy workplace culture.
  • Experience with the LEED rating system and managing a LEED project is preferred.
  • Knowledge of rating systems and standards, such as the WELL Building Standard, Passive House, Fitwel, or others, is preferred.
  • Experience with performance analysis software such as COVE.Tool and Ladybug/Honeybee for Grasshopper is preferred.
  • LEED accreditation or comparable sustainability credential required.
