Veterans, eligible dependents and reservists wanting to advance a career in the green building industry can get financial assistance. If you qualify, The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) will reimburse the full cost of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Associate and LEED AP credential exams. This qualification depends on your access to the G.I. Bill.

Holding a LEED Green Associate credential demonstrates to the thriving sustainability industry that you have mastered green building principles, practices and vital skills. For veterans with experience working on LEED projects or those simply looking to enhance their resumes, a LEED AP with Specialty credential showcases technical working knowledge of the LEED rating system.

The VA will cover 100 percent of test fees for each attempt, whether or not you pass the exam. And the agreement is retroactive, so any veteran who took a LEED exam after Dec.3, 2008, is eligible to have exam fees reimbursed.

In order to be reimbursed, follow these steps: After you take your exam, fill out this form. Then send this form, a copy of your receipt (that can be found in your usgbc.org profile under “Orders”), and a signed and dated statement authorizing the release of your exam scores to the VA to the address located on the above form. It is estimated that the reimbursement will take 4-12 weeks to process.
The program is managed in cooperation with the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), a non-profit organization that promotes sustainability in how buildings are designed, built and operated. USGBC has worked with the VA since 2009 to ensure that all LEED professional credential exams are approved for coverage under the G.I. Bill.
