This presentation will help attendees to identify five LEED credits involving asbestos and other hazardous materials. They will understand potential site contamination (soil and groundwater) from past uses of properties to be developed as LEED new construction projects. Asbestos history, sources, uses, locations, hazards, and current issues will be discussed as well as hazards associated with existing building reuse and demolition (i.e., lead-based paint, PCBs, mercury thermostats, CFC refrigerants, etc.). Finally, participants will gain knowledge of hazardous materials associated with new building construction (i.e., silica, volatile organic compounds, welding fumes, fiberglass, man-made mineral fibers in fire stop materials, asphalt fumes, etc.).
